Photo editing programs "flow" explained

Well I've been using some form photo editing software for about 3 now (something other then MS paint). I started with The Gimp and Picasa and have moved on from there. One thing I never understood until today was the "flow" option you get with the brush and some other tools in software like the Gimp or Photoshop. I never had a problem understand opacity but flow I just didn't get. I've always just used 100% flow and haven't ever felt like I was missing anything. Well I decided to do search or "google" it. Now I have an answer I'm not sure how I will use this information yet but I have it.
Here is where I found it.
The answer I found

Basically while opacity is controlled by the number of pen/mouse stokes flow is decided by the length of time you hold it down.
